Makeup Brushes 101

10 brushes every girl should own and how to use them

1. Foundation Brush

Designed to give your liquid foundation a flawless finish without all those pesky oils from your fingers thinning it out, these brushes help you get to all those hard to reach areas and make applying your foundation a breeze. Simply put a little foundation on the back of your hand and apply to the centre of your face (forehead, nose and cheeks) then blend outwards in long, broad strokes.

2. Concealer Brush

Concealer brushes allow you to have more control over the coverage of blemishes and dark circles without rubbing off the product, while also helping you to reach tight spots –like the corners of your eyes – easily. Dip your brush in your concealer of choice then dab onto the offending areas until blended and fabulous.

3. Blending Brush

With soft, dense bristles Kabuki brushes are perfect for applying mineral powder to the face for that airbrushed look and for blending in all types of powder. For best results dip the brush into your powder and tap off excess product before applying to the face in a circular “buffing” motion. PRO TIP: If you need heavier coverage but don’t want to pile on the products, lightly spritz your brush with plain water before dipping into the powder.

4. Fan Powder Brush

Designed to be used with loose powder, these fan brushes leave your skin with a soft, velvety effect without highlighting fine lines and wrinkles (which makes them perfect for aging skin). Fan brushes can be used for lighter application of setting powder, blush, bronzer and even as a face mask applicator (remember to clean it afterward!) making them one of the most versatile brushes in your bag. PRO TIP:Use this to gently wipe away excess powder on the face, especially after eye shadow application.

5. Powder Brush

Whether you want to contour, define or just give your skin a rosy glow, a rounded powder brush is an essential tool in your makeup brush arsenal. For blush use a smaller brush and concentrate on the apples of your cheeks, sweeping up into your hairline, whereas bronzer can be applied along the cheekbones with a larger brush.  PRO TIP: With bronzer, try applying it in the shape of a number ‘3’ from your forehead around your eye and back down to your chin (then blend – always blend!).

6. Contour Brush

Specially designed to bring out the angles of your cheekbones, these brushes are ideal for both highlighting and shading. First you’ll need to add some depth to your cheekbones with a matte bronzer (go from the apples of your cheeks towards your ear, but below your cheekbones) and then to really make them pop, sweep some highlighter above your cheek bones (below your eye sockets) and voilĂ , cheekbones to make Gisele jealous – just don’t forget to blend to avoid looking like a tiger.

7. Eyeshadow Brush

A good standard eye shadow application brush is an essential. Start by tapping the colour onto your eyelid until there is no color left on your brush, then you can use a light sweeping motion to make sure the colour is distributed evenly. Use a darker shade in the hollow above the eye lid to accentuate eyes and give a subtle (or full on!) smokey eye effect.

8. Blending Eyeshadow Brush

If a standard eye shadow brush is a makeup bag essential then consider a blending brush its conjoined twin – wherever one goes the other should too. Soften the look of multiple eye shadow colours by moving the brush back and forth between the colors with very light pressure (too hard and you’ll just wipe it away!) to blend them seamlessly together.

9. Angled Liner Brush

With firm bristles and a flat head, angled liner brushes can be used to line the eyes with eyeliner and to fill in lashes or brows. The tapered point fits perfectly along the lash line and reaches into the corners and creases for crisp, precise application.

10. Lip Brush

Applying your lipstick with a lip brush helps you get a perfectly defined pout so you can look more like Gwen Stefani than Courtney Love. After prepping your lips and applying liner, start at the centre of your lips and apply the product outwards. Then use the tip to define the corners and cupid bow for a crisp, professional finish.
